Soaring Wings is the creation of one of Austin's most visionary Architects and the result of four years of work by some of the most talented craftsmen in Austin. Completed in 2007, dozens of talented and creative individuals - metal smiths, woodworkers, stonemasons, plasterers and glass workers - came together to create this landmark Austin estate. The structure of Soaring Wings is constructed entirely of red iron on concrete piers sunk deep into rock. All the connections are joined with full penetration welds, the strongest type of connection and many times more costly than bolted connections. The wall panels are made of 7 .-inches of polystyrene insulation, including two layers of plywood sheathing, ice and water shield. This is all followed by the 2-inches of dimensioned shell stone or copper, depending on the area.Soaring Wings was designed to accommodate small or grand entertaining and has served the current owners well as the backdrop for intimate family gatherings and large-scale charity events. The gourmet kitchen features custom-designed cabinets covered in matched vertical grain Fir veneer. Fir is a sustainable wood from the Pacific Northwest with a beautiful reddish/honey hue and a very consistent grain pattern. All of the appliances are manufactured by Thermador. There is a main sink and a prep-sink by the gas cook-top. All the counters are covered in Caeserstone-which is harder than granite and has a unique sparkling quality. There is a separate buffet/pantry area for catering, with a separate entrance and direct access to the elevator. The media room provides the optimum home theater experience, and is also designed to be reconfigured as a private office with a separate outside entrance. There is also a private wine cellar with shellstone entry and vaulted ceiling nearby. Nothing in the quality of construction of the home was compromised, and the mechanical and electrical systems are no exception.Every room is wired for audio, video, computer, telephone and features programmable lighting. Special lighting fixtures include ones from Italy with Murano Glass, and others by well-known designers from around the world. There are seven separate high efficiency heat pumps with enough tonnage to cool the home during a big party on a summer day. The HVAC vents are a special design imported from Japan.Soaring Wings is divided into public and private wings. These wings are separated by a two-story, glass-and steel bridge with stainless-steel ceilings. The master suite occupies the entire lower level of the private wing, and consists of a bedroom and sitting area, his and hers walk-in closet/dressing rooms, and the bath area. The focal point of the bath area is the 3,200-pound bathtub carved from a single block of grey granite that sits in a bed of Mexican beach pebbles, which extend through the floor-to-ceiling glass from the Japanese rock garden beyond. There are his and hers granite vanities, and a steam shower with body sprays and fixtures designed by Phillipe Starck. Soaring over the closets and bath area, is a vaulted ceiling featuring a Venetian Plaster surface. The heated swimming pool is a feat of hydraulic engineering and is the focal point of the private outdoor courtyard. Three powerful pumps move over 500-gallons per minute of water over the waterfall-edge. There are eight deck-mounted fountain jets that shoot into the black granite and Pebbletec pool, and the pool features colored fiber-optic lighting. The purification system consists of salt water and ozone.
